So, today in my infant development class we were talking about reproduction. I don't really have a problem discussing reproduction in a mature manner, but that was before my teacher started comparing it to the storming of Normandy on D-Day. We started talking about how men produce 100 million sperm a day, and then discussed why so many sperm were needed. Apparently, out of the 500 million sperm that is ejaculated, only 100 actually make it to the egg. Technically speaking, you have a better chance of getting on American Idol than a sperm has of making it to the egg, let alone fertilizing it. So, what happens to all the sperm, you may ask? Roughly half of them don't make it out of the vagina, which is comparable to Normandy Beach (according to my teacher). The ones that do make it into the uterus have to deal with a direction problem and a hostile environment. On top of that, some sperm gallantly volunteer to stay behind and "guard the bridge" as it were, from possible foreigners (another WWII analogy). I can never look at the reproductive process again the same way. Biological warfare, who'd of thought.
On an entirely different note, I am finished coding interviews. Hallelujah! I now am one step closer to publishing. Yipee!
